Facts About Cockroaches

There are four types of cockroaches commonly found in the United States: German, Brown-banded, American and Oriental. Of these, German cockroaches are the most prevalent and the most difficult to get rid of. They reproduce quickly, are small in size and are brown in color. They congregate in areas with water, like the kitchen and bathroom.

Unlike German cockroaches, the brown-banded variety like to stay where it is warm and can often be found inside of electronics. They are about the same size as German roaches but are darker in color. American cockroaches are the biggest of all four varieties. They can live for a few years, they can fly, and they are often called “palmetto bugs.”

Oriental cockroaches love the water. They are bigger than German and brown-banded roaches, but they are not quite as big as American roaches. They are also darker in color than their counterparts and they do not fly.

Why Should You Be Worried About Cockroaches?

Cockroaches have the potential to cause diseases like diarrhea. They can also exacerbate the symptoms of people suffering from allergies or asthma. As a result, it is important to address a cockroach problem as soon as possible.

How Can You Get Rid Of Cockroaches?

The best way to control a cockroach problem is to deny them access to food. Make sure you sweep and vacuum often. Take out the trash on a regular basis. Don’t leave food or dirty dishes sitting out and seal up any food containers that the cockroaches might be able to gain access to. Cockroaches also don’t like to be out among people. They want to hide away, and so if there is clutter in the home, they will have an easier time doing that. Pick up so that there are fewer spots for the cockroaches to escape. Finally, use baits to try and eliminate the problem.

How much does it cost for roach extermination?
Just as most pest control services costs depend on the size of the problem, the same can be said for cockroach treatments. Many factors play a role in the price, a few being the size of your home and the size of the infestation. If there is a slightly more massive infestation, $400 is about average for treatment. But you can expect to pay at least $100 for a single roach extermination service. The longer you wait to get rid of an infestation the more it will cost for extermination services.
What to expect when treating cockroaches?
There’s a reason there is a saying that alludes to cockroaches being hard to kill because they are. Roaches can go weeks without eating or drinking, making them extremely tricky to get rid of. Bait is one of the few ways that have been proven effective. With this method, a bait is laid out for roaches to pick up and share. Once the pesticide is brought back to the colony, it is shared amongst the cockroaches, which are what kills them. You can expect treatment to take a week or two, but once the bait is taken to the nest, it is highly effective at getting rid of the problem.
Where do cockroaches nest in your house?
Roaches love living in dark places. Behind the refrigerator or in crawl spaces are two of the favorite places they like to hang out. Roaches will go where the food is, but their nest is often out of the way and hidden. Basements and under sinks are also places you might find a nest of roaches. It is imperative to get rid of a roach problem that the nest is destroyed. In some cases, you might find egg cases from cockroaches under your furniture. If you find evidence of a roach infestation in your house, getting extermination services sooner will be less expensive and the damage from roaches will be less.
How do you stop a roach infestation?
Absolutely! No home is ‘safe’ from a pest problem. Insects, spiders, and bugs lurk everywhere. New home constructions are no different than older homes. Many of the factors that contribute to an infestation can also be present in a new home, such as leaving food out. But one area that more modern houses have the edge over older homes are better sealed. In most cases, newer homes won’t have a sealing problem around the windows and doors, which is a common entry point for pests. To protect your property, it is always best to have routine treatments. This can prevent any infestations for the life of your home.
